Consult a residence permit lawyer about applying for or renewing an ikamet in Türkiye, or reviewing a refusal, cancellation or non-renewal decision. Arrange an initial consultation online or by appointment in Istanbul.

SERVICE SCOPE

How a residence permit lawyer can assist you

If you are planning a stay in Türkiye or need to resolve a problem with an existing application, start with your current immigration position. The purpose of your stay, application history and any notification already received will shape the assessment.

Hukuk&Co can arrange a consultation with the lawyer handling your matter. Depending on the agreed scope, assistance may include:

  • Reviewing your circumstances and the residence category relevant to your intended stay.
  • Assessing documents for an initial, extension or transfer application.
  • Preparing legal submissions and supporting explanations where appropriate.
  • Advising on requests for additional information or documents.
  • Reviewing a refusal, cancellation or non-renewal decision and the available challenge procedure.
  • Representation in agreed administrative or court proceedings, subject to the required authority and a separate engagement.

A consultation, application preparation and litigation are distinct services. The lawyer’s role, deliverables and fees are confirmed before the agreed work begins.

Which residence permit may be relevant?

The Presidency of Migration Management identifies six residence permit categories: short-term, family, student, long-term, humanitarian and residence permits for victims of human trafficking. Their conditions and procedures differ. Official permit categories ↗

The assessment should focus on the category that fits your actual circumstances. A reason for wishing to stay, a property purchase or a family connection should not be treated as a promise of eligibility. The applicable conditions and supporting evidence need individual review.

Residence permission and work permission are different questions.

This page concerns residence permits. If your purpose includes employment or operating a business, explain this at the consultation so the relevant work-permit or other requirements can be assessed separately.

Residence permit rejection, cancellation or non-renewal

Keep the full decision and evidence of when and how it was notified. Official guidance explains that refusal, cancellation and non-renewal notifications should include information about challenge rights and the relevant rights and obligations. Migration Management guidance ↗

The first legal review should identify the decision being challenged, the stated reasons, the notification date, your current status and any related action. The lawyer can then assess the available procedure, applicable time limits, supporting evidence and whether a request for interim relief is appropriate.

Do not assume that sending an enquiry, submitting another application or starting a challenge gives you permission to remain or travel. Ask the lawyer to assess your position before acting. A residence-permit dispute, a removal decision, immigration detention and an entry ban may require separate assessments.

If you have received a decision, mention it in your first enquiry.

State the decision date, notification date and any deadline shown on the notice. Ask for a secure way to provide the complete document. Do not wait for a general appointment if a deadline may be approaching.

Documents to prepare for an initial assessment

The exact checklist depends on the permit category, application type and your circumstances. The following is a preparation guide, not a complete official application checklist:

Identity and current status

  • Passport and relevant entry or visa information.
  • Current or previous residence permit, if any.
  • Application record, appointment details and previous correspondence.

Purpose and supporting evidence

  • Records explaining the purpose of your stay.
  • Available address, accommodation, financial and insurance information where relevant.
  • Relevant family, study or other supporting documents.

For a refusal review, also prepare the full decision, notification records and a short timeline. Do not alter or recreate missing documents. Tell the lawyer what is unavailable so the next steps can be assessed.

The official e-İkamet system provides application-specific requirements. Translation, notarisation or certification needs should be checked for the particular documents. Official e-İkamet portal ↗

Working with a residence permit lawyer in Istanbul or online

  1. Share a brief outline.

Tell us your nationality, current location, purpose of stay, whether you are applying or challenging a decision, and any approaching deadline. Avoid sending sensitive records until the sharing method is agreed.

  2. Confirm the consultation.

Availability and potential conflicts are checked. The appointed lawyer, consultation format, scope and fee are confirmed.

  3. Review your position and documents.

The lawyer considers the information available, identifies missing material and explains the possible procedure and practical limitations.

  4. Agree any further engagement.

Application assistance, written advice or representation is agreed separately. Government charges, translation, certification and other external costs are distinguished from professional fees.

Online consultations can help you begin from abroad. They do not remove any personal-attendance, identity-verification or document requirements imposed by the relevant procedure.

Residence permit questions

Can I apply without a lawyer?

Foreign nationals can use the official e-İkamet application system themselves. Legal assistance is a separate professional service for assessing circumstances, documents and legal issues; it is not a government appointment service. Check requirements directly through the official portal.

Can a lawyer guarantee that my application will be approved?

No. The competent authority decides the application. A lawyer can assess the legal position and assist within the agreed scope, but cannot promise a permit, a favourable court decision or a particular completion date.

Can a lawyer help with a residence permit rejection or appeal?

A refusal should be reviewed together with its notification and your circumstances. Official guidance provides for information about challenge rights in the notification. The appropriate remedy, time limit and effect on your status require an individual legal assessment.

Can everything be handled while I am abroad?

An initial consultation can be online. Further steps depend on the application or proceedings, your location, required documents and any power of attorney. Official guidance notes that personal attendance can be required. Do not assume that instructing a lawyer removes appointment requirements.

Can I remain in Türkiye or travel while my matter is pending?

Do not rely on a general answer. Your current status, application documents and any decisions must be assessed before remaining, leaving or re-entering. A pending application or dispute should not be treated as unrestricted travel permission.

What does the consultation cost?

The consultation fee and any document-review scope are confirmed when the appointment is arranged. Further application work or proceedings require a separate agreement. Ask for a breakdown of professional fees, official charges and external costs.

Questions about a humanitarian residence permit

If your enquiry concerns a humanitarian residence permit in Türkiye, identify that at the outset and provide a concise explanation of the circumstances and available decisions. The appropriate legal basis, evidence and available procedure require assessment; this route should not be presented as an automatic alternative whenever another residence application is refused.
