THE QUICK ANSWER

What to know first

A legal matter is managed through an accepted scope, organised facts and documents, a strategy, the steps required by the relevant procedure and clear reporting. There is no single sequence or timetable for every Turkish case. Ask which stage your matter is at, what has been completed, what remains pending and which decision or document is needed from you.

  • Confirm the responsible lawyer and the accepted work before relying on any procedural action.
  • Distinguish the lawyer’s task, a court or authority’s next step and your own instructions.
  • A decision, an appeal and enforcement can involve separate work and deadlines.

Acceptance: establish the instruction and responsibility

Case management begins with a clear engagement, rather than the first message about a dispute. Identify the client, the parties, any existing lawyer, the requested work and potential timing concerns. Availability, conflicts, scope, fees and authority need to be addressed before assuming action will be taken.

If a matter is already underway, provide the file reference, complete procedural records and known dates. Ask who is responsible for the next step and how acceptance is confirmed. A new enquiry does not itself transfer a file or replace an existing representative.

Build a usable file and chronology

The lawyer needs to connect your account to the available records. Organise contracts, payments, notices, decisions and correspondence in a dated index. Preserve complete versions, attachments and relevant evidence of delivery. Explain missing documents, inconsistent names and any records held by someone else.

Distinguish your objective from the evidence supporting it. A case may involve facts that are disputed or difficult to prove. Tell the lawyer about unfavourable material as well as supportive records so that the assessment does not rest on an incomplete account.

For a practical preparation list, see legal documents for foreign individuals and businesses. Agree which documents need translation, certification or further retrieval before paying to prepare the entire folder.

Assess the route and decisions to be made

The relevant process depends on the type of matter. A civil dispute, criminal investigation, administrative challenge, enforcement instruction and consensual transaction do not all follow the same sequence. The Turkish legal-system guide introduces those institutional differences.

Ask the lawyer to explain the proposed route, important assumptions, possible alternatives and any preliminary step that needs checking. Discuss the practical objective, evidence, cost and uncertainty. A recommendation should also identify what could change the assessment or require another instruction.

Do not infer that litigation is necessary just because there is a disagreement. Equally, do not assume an informal discussion protects a deadline. Have the procedural position assessed for the actual matter.

Understand the stages without assuming a fixed timetable

Illustrative stages of a disputed matter
StageWhat to ask
Initial assessmentWhat is known, missing or time-sensitive?
Route and preparationWhich process, documents, authority and budget are required?
Accepted procedural workWhat has been filed or completed, and what confirmation is available?
Evidence and hearingsWhich events are scheduled and what participation is needed?
Decision and next optionsWhat does the decision mean and which further steps need review?
Implementation or closureIs collection, registration, handover or another instruction required?

This is an orientation, not the procedure for every case. Some matters resolve before proceedings; others have additional or different stages. Estimates should identify their assumptions and dependencies, including court, authority or third-party steps that the lawyer cannot control.

Follow progress through useful updates

A useful update explains the last material event, the present stage, the next expected step and any action needed from you. Ask whether a document has been prepared, submitted or accepted for processing; these can be different events. Keep copies of the records provided under the engagement.

The Ministry of Justice’s UYAP services overview describes electronic case services and access within authorised roles. It does not mean that every foreign client has the same independent portal access, or that every step can be completed online. Ask the lawyer which records can be shared and how your own access, if available, works.

A status entry or screenshot can need legal explanation. Clarify its significance before treating it as a final result or calculating a deadline yourself.

Your role during the matter

Respond to requests for facts, documents and decisions through the agreed contact. Keep your address and availability current. Forward a new notice promptly in complete form, including how and when it arrived, and state any apparent deadline without assuming that it has already been assessed.

Ask before taking a step that may affect the strategy, such as signing an agreement, sending a substantive response or accepting a payment arrangement. If settlement is being considered, clarify the instructions and authority required. Keep the lawyer informed of direct contact from the other side or another professional.

Use the communication guide to agree how urgent developments and ordinary updates will be handled.

A decision is a new point for assessment

When a decision arrives, ask for an explanation of what it resolves, what remains open and whether any remedy or implementation step needs review. Preserve the complete decision and notification record. The relevant route and time limit need to be checked for that decision, rather than inferred from a general guide.

Appeal, enforcement, registration or collection may require additional authority, costs or a further engagement. A favourable decision does not guarantee payment or immediate implementation. Confirm which later stages are included in the existing scope and which need a separate proposal.

Closure and handover

At the end of the agreed work, ask for a clear account of its status, remaining decisions and records to retain. Clarify any external expenses, originals or ongoing obligations. A file can reach the end of one engagement while another stage is still possible.

If representation changes, coordinate the authority position, pending dates, document transfer and fee arrangements with the appropriate lawyer. The aim is a documented handover with clear responsibility for the next step. Read legal service agreements for the scope and termination questions to clarify.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How long will a legal case in Turkey take?

There is no universal timetable. Ask for an estimate tied to the actual procedure, stage, evidence and dependencies, with updates when assumptions change.

Can I follow my file online from abroad?

Possible access depends on identity, authentication, permissions and the service concerned. Ask which portal access is available to you and which records the lawyer can provide.

Does a favourable judgment mean the money has been recovered?

No. A decision and actual recovery are different. Ask whether enforcement or another implementation step is needed and whether it is included in the engagement.
